Macau is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Often referred to as the “Vegas of the East”, the strong and open economy of Macau is heavily dependant on the gaming and tourism industry which contributes to its prosperity and qualifies it as one of the richest cities in Asia.
Macau was a Portuguese colony, and both the first and last European colony in China. This has resulted in a unique blend of cultures that is evident around the city. Made up of four distinct areas, the old city centre can be found on the Macau Peninsula, while perfectly preserved Macanese architecture can be found on Taipa. Cotai is home to the mega-casinos, and Coloane is lined with beaches and colonial Portuguese villages.
Buses and taxis are plentiful, enabling smooth travel from area to area within the city.
